  • Vulnerability scanning is usually done through an automated tool.

  • A vulnerability scan is different from a penetration test. However, a vulnerability scan is usually conducted as part of a penetration test.

  • The two most popular vulnerability scanning tools are Nessus and OpenVAS. Nessus has a paid and a community version with some restrictions, whereas OpenVAS is completely free.
